Can you have a horizontal crack in your tooth?!

Question:

Can you have a horizontal crack in your tooth?

I'm trying to read up on cracked teeth( I just found out that I have one) and I'm seeing that the majority of cracks are vertical ones. Is it possible to have a horizontally cracked tooth? Is one worse than the other?

Answers:

Horizontal fractures can occur, less commonly than vertical ones. They can be a real pain to the patient, and to fix. I would only consider a crown on the tooth. It needs to be completely covered by the crown to prevent flexing of the cusps during chewing. A filling will probably not work due to not giving the tooth enough support/reinforcement.
