I have gum disease...?!

Question: I'm 18 and I have gum disease. It's been less than 6 months since I've gone to the dentist, so the insurance won't cover it for a while.

I admit that I took horrible care of my teeth until about 2 years ago, and now I'm worried that I'm going to get periodontitis (sp?)!

What do I do to get rid of it? I don't want to have to pay the whole bill for the dentist, but I don't want my teeth to fall out because of it either.

To avoid further complications, make sure you brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day (Atleast).
Since you have gingivitis (not sure what stage), your gums will bleed while brushing and flossing, but this is OK! Continue to brush and floss. I know it may be uncomfortable at first, but your gums will tighten up and stop bleeding in time.
Also, use an over the counter mouth rinse. Listerine is good. Your dentist can also prescribe a mouth rinse if he/she feels that it is necessary.
Don't forget to have your bi-annual cleanings and exams. This will also reduce your risk of further periodontal issues.
If you make an appointment to have a consultation with your dentist, some or all should be covered by your ins. co.
I think you'll be fine if you continue to take care of your teeth! The key is brushing, flossing and dental cleanings!

You already have it - that's what gum disease is. Pay out of pocket to get your teeth/gums back into shape. Gum disease is reversible but it's a shame you've got it at such a young age. Be diligent in your dental care; believe me, you won't like the alternative...BTW, gum disease is linked to heart disease, too.

Start flossing religiously. Also brushing at least twice a day and using Antiseptic mouthwash like Listerine twice a day AM & PM.

Sometimes this can help until you're able to get to the dentist. But you may still have to get treatment from the dentist also.
