Questions regarding a possibly dying tooth?!

Question: I got hit in the mouth (accident during a cheer stunt) on Jan 24. We went to the dentist right after the accident. Xrays were taken & they said the root isn't fractured & to wear my retainer all week since my front tooth was moved. I just got home from my 3rd dentist appointment since the incident. I noticed this past week the tooth started to turn gray. My dentist took more xrays & suggested me to a doctor who does a really good job with root canals and veneers who will test to see if my tooth is dying or just in the healing process. I have sensitivity to heat and cold and there is tenderness if I accidently bite down and hit that tooth. Now for questions:

1) How long does it generally take for a tooth to die?
2) If the tooth dies before I can get the root canal, can veneers still be placed on it or does the tooth -have- to be pulled out?
3) If the tooth must be pulled out is there some other permanent or long term procedure that can replace the tooth that was lost

thanks

Time varies for the nerve to dye but yours is dying & will require a root canal & a crown. Your dentist will confirm this. DMD here
