How common is it for people to have 3 roots in their molars?!

Question: My dentist says this is a genetic trait. I was just wondering how rare it is. He happened to mention it when I had a root canal recently. Lol, am I a mutant? ;-)

I don't think that you posed your question according to what you really mean. The upper maxillary molars have three roots, the lower mandibular molars have two. You could mean how common is it to have three canals in molar teeth? The canals are what is inside the root of the teeth, this is where the nerves are. I don't quite get your question. However as I said upper molars have three roots, and lower molars have two. How many canals that are inside these roots vary.

Not rare, just not very commonly found. I have this too. My mother also. It does tend to run in families.
My sone has a third tooth coming in, Yes the second permanent tooth. Imagine the looks I got. I've always told him to brush good, it's the only set of teeth you'll get..........

Your maxillary molars (upper) are suppose to have three roots, with the exception of the 3rd (they could have 1, 2, 3 or 4 roots).
