Answers:

Zoom whitening is a wonderful tooth whitener, but it is not for everyone nor does it work for everyone.
One of the possible side effects of tooth whitening is the inflammation of the nerves of the teeth. Usually it it minor and goes away in a few day with the taking of over the counter antiinflammatory drugs such as Motrin. In some cases though, the nerve becomes so inflammed that root canal therapy has to be done. All of our patients sign a informed consent before any tooth whitening procedure is done.
You can try to use a de-sensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne. This might help somewhat.
As to the grit on your teeth, did you dentist clean your teeth before the procedure? If not, go have them cleaned.
As to the color going back to what it was, some enamel just does not want to whiten too much. Also, if you've been eating and drinking foods that darken your teeth such as tea, red wine, red pasta sauces, curries, fruit pies, berries etc., this will stain your teeth before the bleaching "cures".
Either way, you should see the dentist that treated you and discuss your concerns.
