Problem about my poor tooth!?!

Question:

Problem about my poor tooth!?

about a year ago i was messing around and someone's elbow jammed into my mouth. now my left front tooth has turned a darker shade. not drastically or anything and sometimes it is a little sensetive. i got braces and the dentist said they could take a closer look at it after i got my braces off. what do you think they will do?? can it be fixed or bleached??

Answers:

When you hit a tooth is severes the nerve in the tooth causes the tooth to "die". The way to determine that a tooth is dead is the discolouration or the tooth not being able to sense any temperature on it. So if you were to touch it with a small piece of ice you would not be able to tell that it was cold. The discolouration is actually the internal bleeding inside the tooth and the blood products are being absorbed into the enamel showing through is a darker hugh. If left the tooth will continue to get darker. The tooth will need root canal treatment in order to remove the nerve which is the source here. Then when the root canal is being done your dentist could internally bleach the tooth and then seal a little bit of bleach internally to allow it to penetrate the enamel (he could just place a temporary filling in and then give it a few days and then go back and then place a permanent filling). If the colour does not improve enough to make you happy then you could consider either a crown or veneer (which just covers the front surface of your tooth). With a veneer you cut down less tooth structure to do it. Then you could always do a crown later down the road.........
