Tooth abscesses & Penicillin?!

Question: I have been to the doctor for a tooth abscess, I had woken up after a few days of head, neck and ear pain with a lump in my gums. I was given NOVO-PEN-VK-500 300mg and was told to take 2 pills twice a day for 10 days and to see a dentist when he swelling goes down.

My question is...

How long until I start to see results, in the 2 days (4 doses) of medication, if anything it is swollen a bit more and covering a larger area including wrapping around my cheek and under my neck/chin a bit.

Is it possible that I just caught it half way to where it was going to swell? Is it normal for it to take 3 or more days to start working? or should I be relaxing and letting the 10 days run their course.

This might alarm you a bit but I have to warn you. I would definitely see a dentist first thing tomorrow morning. If the infection is spreading to the neck area, it might be the beginnings of a true emergency. Do some research on Ludwig's Angina and you will see that if you let this problem continue you might be risking your life. No joke. You might need an incision and drainage at this point so please for your own sake take care of the problem A.S.A.P

It is normal for it to take 3 days to start working, but usually they have you take 1 pill 3 times a day, if a dentist prescribes it. You may need a stronger dose of antibiotics, see your dentist. You might ask when you call to schedule if you should double up the meds or take 1 pill 3 times a day.

It shouldn't take too many days to start seeing results. Try rinsing with warm salt water to help relieve the pain. Also, don't wait too long after the antibiotics are done to get the problem fixed or you will feel it! The infection from an abscess does not go away fully. It sits there and eats the roots of the tooth. Don't waste any time getting this fixed!
