Alternatives to Orajel or risk of O.D.- Dental Advice please!?!

Question: I've put off serious dental issues for too many years and am now paying the consiquences. I have a tooth that the root must be exposed or something because it is almost blinding pain. It began late 2 nights ago but went away by morning. It picked up again last night and this morning I ran to the drug store and got the adult kind. I've had to use it probably 15+ times which is about once every half hour right now. I've consulted a walgreens pharmacist who advised I try extra strength tylenol and avoid the orajel as much as possible now. Are there any other suggestions? Anyone know what I can use to get me through tomorrow (I am rushing to a dentist ASAP). I used oragel less than an hour ago and already my mouth is throbbing. I took the tylenol about 20 minuets ago. Help!

Alternate the tylenol then 2 hours later ibuprofen and then 2 hours later tylenol and 2 hours later ibuprofen for best over the counter help. Ibuprofen will help more than tylenol b/c tylenol has no antiinflammatory effect. You probably have an infected tooth and antibiotics will give the most relief. Make an appointment to see your dentist, but if you have a primary care physician that can call in antibiotics for you that would be best. The pressure of the infection is what causes the pain. You will want the infection gone before having dental work done or you won't get numb as well.

get to the dentist!!!!

I would use children's benadryl applied directly to the gums when I first got braces. If you can get a syringe (without the needle, obviously) that will help you apply it directly to the gums.
