How can i persuade my parents to take me to the dentists so i can get braces??!

Question: i live in spain and haven't beent o the dentists for at least 3 years. i didn't use to go in england, but now i feel really self-concious. i live in spain so i have to overcome the language barrier as well. i'm 14 and actually want braces. nearly all the spanish out here have prefectly straight teeth, and mine are really crooked, even my friends say so. we're not exactly well off for money but this could affect my whole life. somebody help me, i just feel so out of place and different to everyone else.
my mum says she won't take me to the dentist because if i clean my teeth twice a day (which i do) then i won't need braces.
please please help!!! :'(

I know how frustrating this is - I am an adult who couldn't get braces until I was much older. I hated my teeth so I never smiled. My parents simply couldn't afford for us to get braces - I have 2 brothers who also were unable to get braces.

I just got my braces off a year ago, and I love my straight teeth, plus it was healthier for me - my teeth were too crowded, so even going for cleanings the dentist had a tough time because of so much crowding.

First, you need to get to a dentist for a cleaning and check up. Even if you brush your teeth twice a day, it does not remove the bacteria and plaque near your gums, and you could end up with gum disease. If left untreated, you could loose teeth as a result. If you do need braces, the dentist should talk to your parents.

If your parents can't afford it, you're unfortunately going to have to wait like I did until I could pay for it myself.

Good luck - I hope this works out for you.

it don't matter if you clean teeth 6 times a day you still need to go to the dentist at least once a year for pro cleanings and x rays then talk to the dentist then to see if he would tell your parents you need braces

Braces are NOT just for cosmetic reasons. THey are for HEALTH reasons!!! I needed braces for health reasons and so did a lot of my friends. There are hundreds of problems that could happen if you don't get braces. It is not good for teeth to grow crooked, or for your bite to be crooked, or for your roots to grow crooked. You should definitely get your teeth, jaw and roots checked (you will probably need an X-ray of your jaw).

Many adults wear braces now. I guess it's because they couldn't get their teeth straightened when they were children.
I don't know it the reason that your parents won't take you is money or not but if they can't afford it than all is not lost. You can take yourself when you are grown and can earn the money yourself.
In the meantime, keep telling your parents how much you want to get your teeth straightened. Remind them that it will affect your life both as a child and an adult. Tell them how much better you will feel about yourself if your teeth were straight.
If nothing works than just remember--you can get it done yourself later on.

if you feel your parent have the money but just don't want to give it to put it on your braces, then go and ask for it. but if you feel your parents can't afford it or need to sacrifice food or education for it, i'll drop the case. just have it when you yourself can afford it.

My Dad's sister talked my parents into getting braces for me. If you have an adult talk to your parents maybe they will listen.

If that doesn't work, & they simply refuse, get yourself a job as soon as you are old enough, save your money & someday you can have it done yourself. Lots of adults wear braces, so don't give up.
