Im getting braces soon, is it really going to hurt like they say it does?!

Question: Well heres the thing. They told me that they want to either brake my jaw, or make me wear rubberbands, i would rather do rubber bands becuase I really dont want my jaw broken. Does wearing the rubberbands with the braces really hurt or is everyone just scareing me... I dont know, do you?

i got my braces on a year ago. it wasnt so bad the worse part about it was sitting there with your mouth open for a long time and occasionally the orthodontist would pour water in my mouth. another thing i remember is the cement they used....dont lick it!! it tastes sooooo sour like super ultra lemons i think that spacers were alot worse. also you might want to eat softer foods on the first few days i ate popcorn an hour after i got mine on and it hurt soo badd!!

good luck and stay strong!!!

Geezzzz...we must have went to the same guy. Breaking the jaw to correct an over or under bite it soooooooo extreme... I would first start by getting another opinion. That's what i did and they fixed my underbite with a palet stretcher and lots of rubber bands and springs. Rubber bands are uncomfortable the first day or so, but once things start moving it's fine....it's definately tolerable. Don't let those clowns break your jaw, definately go get another opinion.

it feels more like your jaw is tired all the time more then hurting. but errr i wouldn't get my jaw broken either i'm defiantly with you on that. rubber bands aren't that band but the thicker they are the harder it is to open your mouth wide. in any case just getting normal braces hurts bad for the first 2-5 weeks anyway.

and also i just lost my retainer... $700 to replace don't loose your's when you get it

omg... DON'T get ur jaw broken!!!!! rubber bands are a breeze! they don't hurt at all!!!!! only if they're thicker, they don't hurt that bad, but not as bad as the thin ones, its just harder to open and close ur mouth... but still!!!!! they're easy, and everything will go fine... by the way... don't listen to those ppl... they're just tyring to scare u!!!!! n e way... good luck! : )

I will have had my braces for a year in just a week. I still have one more year to go.. ughhh. But ya, when you first get the braces on, it hurts like crazy! But after 4-7 days the pain goes away, but eating still feels funny. After 10 days it's like normal. now...rubber bands! I just started wearing those a month ago! They hurt when you first got them on, but now they feel fine!

?

definitely get another orthodontist opinion before you have your jaw broken. that sounds extreme.
the spacers that go in before you get the braces can hurt because your teeth are moving. taking ibuprofen or tylenol will help.
when you first get the braces on, your whole mouth may be sore as your gums/cheeks get used to the metal being there. your orthodontist should give you some wax to cover the areas where the wires or brackets may irritate your mouth.
when you go for your regular (usually monthly) visits to adjust or tighten the bands, you may feel some pain for a day or two. it might help to take pain reliever just before your visit, and then have soft foods like applesauce, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, etc.
braces are a pain to have and brush/floss sometimes, but it will be worth it when they are off and you have a straight smile. i'll be getting mine off soon (i hope!) after 3 years.
hope this helps. good luck!
