Deep cleaning?!

Question: I'm going to have a deep cleaning tomorrow on my whole entire mouth and sit there for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. That's all I know so far... What are they going to do in my mouth? Will it hurt? :[

When you go in for your appointment the dentist (or hygienist) will probably numb your gums. (This can be done with a shot or with a topical solution.)

Then, the hygienist will use an ultrasonic instrument that sprays water and removes the tartar from your teeth. He/she will also use instruments to scale the remaining tartar from your teeth ("fine-tune").

Usually a deep cleaning is completed in 2 (sometimes more) appointments. It all depends on "how deep" the tartar is under your gums.

You'll probably be asked to return for another cleaning within 1-3 months. It is well worth keeping on top of things once the deep cleaning is complete.

You may experience a little sensitivity to the gums after your appointment. Take an ibuprofen and rinse with warm salt water. If it is uncomfortable during the cleaning, let the hygienist know that your gums need more anesthesia.

You'll be fine! Good luck! Glad to hear that you're taking the first step to better oral health!

my mom is a dentist and i get them all the time, they are good for you and they are pretty painless lol.

Yeah especially after. My mom is a dentist and they normally dont do the whole mouth at one time..

yes, it will be uncomfortable. most of our patients say that taking a couple asprin before having it done helps them out afterward.
