Tonsillitis, Gum infection?!

Question: Well, a few days ago I woke up and noticed my left tonsil was hurting very bad. I go to look in the mirror and it doesn't look like normal tonsil stones, but left tonsil is swollen and it looked as if there was white puss on it or something. Over the past few days I've gargled salt water and listerine (as I've read) and then just yesterday there is 4 cankersores in my mouth (on the top and bottom lip) Does anyone know how I can get rid of this all together? I've consired having my tonsils removed since I've have sinus problems and all through the year. Its day four and I'm still very sick, I want to go to a doctor, but haven't been able to yet. (I haven't done anything bad to get coldsores in my mouth) Just been sick, is my tonsils hurting causing the canker sores to be there? Any advice is helpful, serious only though. Thanks.

Canker sores or cold sores? If they are on the outside of your lips and a little scabby, then they are cold sores and you can get some over the counter treatments like Abreva or you can get antiviral medication from your doctor or dentist. If they are more on the inside of your lips and they are like little whitish ulcers then they are canker sores and there isn't really a treatment but there are things you can buy at the drug store to cover them like an intra-oral band aid and make you more comfortable. No one really knows what causes canker sores, but they are often brought on by sickness and stress or acidic foods like tomatoes. Cold sores are from the herpes simplex virus and you could have gotten that from anywhere, even as an infant when relatives or family friends or even your parents where kissing your cute little face all the time and you have it forever just lying dormant until you get sick or stressed and then you have an outbreak. If you get them a lot I'd go to your dentist or doctor and ask about an antiviral medication in the future because those work the best when you take it at the very first sign of an outbreak. For now I'd just go with the Abreva to shorten the duration.
Hope you feel better soon!
