My tooth is killing me!!!?!

Question:

My tooth is killing me!!!?

My tooth hurts so bad at night, some nights worse than others. I HATE dentist but I also hate the pain. I took two vicodens and a percocet but its not doing anything, my whole side of my face hurts (my ear, my neck, and my throat). I really cannot afford to go to the dentist and its also 11pm so none are open. Does anyone know of some things I can do to releive the pain????

Answers:

As a dentist myself (DMD) I advise you to seek medical attention as soon as possible. It sounds like from your symptoms that you have an abscessed (infected) tooth that will need antibiotic therapy immediately. An abscess is an extremely painful ordeal and is also a very serious condition that can prove to have life threatening complications. This infection can spread into the throat causing a complete airway obstruction and can also spread to the heart and brain. You WILL need to see a dentist immediately, until you can see your dentist my best advice would be to visit your local ER TONIGHT, the ER physician will be able to prescribe you a very strong antibiotic (ie penicillin) and will also prescribe you a stronger pain medication. Even though the antibiotics and pain meds will ease your pain, the tooth will still need to be checked by a dentist as this problem will not go away. Usual treatment for an abscess are: antibiotics/pain meds and usually either tooth extraction (pulling) or root canal therapy. Until you can get to the ER, try taking Motrin (Ibuprofen) as this will help ease the pain and also help with inflammation/swelling and use cold ice packs, NEVER use heat with an infection as this will cause the pain to get worse in the long run and possibly spread the infection faster. PLEASE seek medical/dental attention as soon as possible before this gets any more serious. Good luck and hope you are better soon!
