Please help me regarding periodontal probing I had done!!?!

Question: I went to a new dentist and I have never felt this being done before by my previous excellent dentists. I have healthy gums and the mesurements she was saying to her assistant were 1s and 2s with some 3s at the back. Now, this lady pushed hard with the probe and made my gums bleed. I had this done yesterday morning and it is now the night of the next day and my gums are so sore I have a face ache, when I floss my gums now feel "loose" and not as tight around my teeth and I have been rinsing with salt water andf my gums literally feel like they are "flapping" around a bit whereas they never felt like that before when rinsing. Now since I know I have healthy gums and after research, my measurements are all healthy...... my question is, can this dentist have actually damaged my gums with excessive force???? I read it should be done gently and this was more than firm and hurt...... I wanted to yell out everytime she remarked a gum was bleeding... orcourse it is with how hard u r pushing!

Be glad you had the exam and your numbers were great! I have that exam every time I go to the dentist. It hurts, but I haven't lost any teeth in the past 10 years. They didn't hurt your gums. For the record, I have come up from an 8 to a 3. I have 1 tooth that is a 1 and it's super-sensitive. Even my toothbrush sends me.

Tell them you have sensitive teeth. My people are very easy about my sensitive teeth. I remind them, before we start. Why didn't you yell? I yell if my people hurt me. Especially, if it's a 1 tooth. Now they ask me and I can tell them what they'll find.

It's your mouth and your money. Call the shots.

i would go to another dentist to get a second opinion it does not sound normal. You were probably one of her first patient in that type of procedure.

It's normal what this dentist did. (And it feels awful...) Give it a week and you'll be fine.

The person who usually does this is the dental hygentist, not your actual dental technician. I might suggest you arrange a call or chance to sit down with your dentist and discuss this matter throughly. I might add that the probing was done incorrectly and you might be experiencing pain due to that.
They were doing a procedure called perioscaling, It's used to determine dental problems like gum disease and periodontal disease. If the dental tech did this i would find a new dentist immediatly and discuss previous dental office procedure.

You might be able to persue legal action if you so desire. As you are now in pain due to negligence.
Take some ibuprofen (if not allergic) and that will help with the inflamation and use cold compress to soothe the aching and swelling.

Good luck!

usually it can not be the reason why your gums are bleeding, most of the time it depends on your dental hygiene at home. If your pocket measurement was around a 3's, that's a top number of the normal gums. So keep flossing TWICE a day and your gums will be fine, cause that's what happen when u don't floss as often u should after each professional cleanings your gums become sore and bleeding. Good luck!!!

Perio probing is a necessary service at a dental office. 1, 2, and 3 mm probes are fairly good. healthy gums should not bleed. Do you floss regularly? If so this procedure should not hurt badly. Your gums should not be damaged by this preventative procedure. Keep flossing.
