Dentist put somethng brown and stringy in my hole left from tooth removal, What !

Question:

Dentist put somethng brown and stringy in my hole left from tooth removal, What is it? when will it get out?

Had tooth removal on monday 28th (it is now sat 2nd) Yesterday the dentist put this foul tasting stringy brown thing in my mouth, kind of numbed me again afterwards and tastes foul.

He said it would fall out probably by lunch time (liquids only lol) I think only part of it has though as I keep getting the taste and can see stringy bits still. Will the rest fall out? or will I have to get the dentist to remove it again? I don't want the hole closing over it and getting an even worse infection.

Thanks. :-)

Answers:

As a dentist (DMD) I can assure you that Mickie is correct, this was probably Iodaform packing which is a cotton gauze soaked in iodine which is used to prevent infection. Best advice is since you have had a couple of days worth of recovery you should begin to rinse vigorously with warm salty water, this will also help ensure that no food particles get trapped inside the socket and will also prevent any infection. Also continue to take any prescribed antibiotics that your dentist may have given you.
