My jaw pops when it closes?!

Question:

My jaw pops when it closes?

When I close my mouth/jaw it seems to pop into place. I can close it without it popping but it doesn't seem to be in place or line up. It doesn't do it when I open it and it doesn't hurt. This has happened for as long as I can remember and my dad has a similar thing (when he eats you can hear his jaw popping). Mine only does it when I close my mouth completley so my teeth touch. I was wondering if there is anything wrong with this or if anything needs to be done with this. I'm not sure if this matters but I have braces.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Why would I sleep with an apple in my mouth?.... Sorry, I don't get it.

Answers:

You have a TMJ disorder. (I have this too). Often caused by stress and tension, teeth-clenching or grinding, or injury to the jaw. If it is not causing you any pain you will not need treatment. If it is causing you pain or is locking then you should see your doctor who should refer you to a specialist. Treatment will depend on the severity of your condition, you may simply need to wear a splint (sort of like a little mouthguard) at night while sleeping, or you may need minor surgery on the joint. Be sure to tell your dentist because they should take extra care when working on you so as not to aggrivate the condition.
