Black marks on my teeth?!

Question:

Black marks on my teeth?

Hey, I've noticed lately that I have what appears to be small black marks on several of my front teeth.

I don't drink tea, or coffee, nor do I smoke. Any idea what might be causing it?

Cheers in advance.

I forgot to add that it looks more like the teeth are discolored (almost transparent like) and at the top of the bottom teeth and bottom of the front teeth then anywhere else.

Answers:

If these are in between the teeth or around the gum area which are the most common places for decay to develop, then it most likely is decay and should be taken care of promptly. What may appear small to you on the outside, can be much larger once the decay is removed. See your dentist so this can be evaluated further with an exam and x rays. Good luck and I hope I've been of some help!

Additional information: If this is where the tissue meets the teeth it "could be" decay or it "could be" a build up of calculus and tartar which is common at the lower anterior tongue side due to the salivary gland secretions there, but not common on the upper.

So if you haven't had a cleaning in awhile, it's time to get one done. If this is build up it will cause damage to the tissue; swelling, bleeding which are signs of gingivitis, then later perio pockets, abscesses, mobility along with the bone loss as advanced perio disease destroys your teeth, bone and tissue.

If this is on the incical edge of the teeth, most likely it's caused from staining but still should be checked by your dentist since this is uncommon.

It's time to see your dentist and have this evaluated and taken care of before you reach stages that leave you no choice but extractions. I hope you will take my advice and see your dentist soon. Good luck!
