small percent chance

The most common cause is nicotine and alcohol use.

Another reason is chronic irritation from ill fitting partial or chronic biting, etc.

At your regular 6 month visits, getting dental x-rays (like bitewings) is WELL BELOW the maimum yearly dose!

if there is a lump, go get it checked out by your dentist. I've seen people get all crazy about lumps and have diagnosed normal bone (tori), salivary glands (fordyce granules), enlarged stenson's duct (normal duct for salivary gland). But this year I have diagnosed squamos cell carcinoma. Get those bumps checked and biopsied!!!
