Getting Spacers?!

Question: I have to get spacers tom. I am really nervous. How much do they hurt? What do they feel like? What are the best food to eat afterwards (soft)? Which are worse spacers or braces? An answer to any of these would be really helpful. Thanks!

Spacers are tiny elastics that are "flosssed" between the teeth to make a small space between the teeth. They wrap around the contact areas betwen your teeth. They are removed (we just pop them out - it doesn't hurt) at the visit when the bands are placed on your teeth.

In general, they are placed about 1 week before the bands are to be put on. When they are first placed, it feels as if there is something stuck between your teeth, like popcorn or a piece of meat. This feeling lasts for an hour or so. When the teeth move from the spacers (about 6-10 hours after they are placed), some people experience some discomfort in the teeth that are moving, and some people also feel that the gums are irritated in these areas. You may also feel the spacers more on one side, or more on the top than the bottom (or vice versa) -- it just depends on how tight the teeth are together and how close the spacers are to your gums. You may also find that you bite against one or more of the spacers -- this is normal.

dont worry about a thing. they dont hurt at all!! so just relax.
hope i helped :D

hey i wear braces myself and my dentist told me what to do so your doctor will do the same it will be a little painful and at first the will feel annoing and like little food particles stuck on your tooth that wont go away but anyhoo listen you won't be allowed to eat any type of food that you have to really bite also no candy and sweets for a period of time. I would recommend that you get ready for this by preparing things you could eat with out really doin excessive amount of chewing. So go for the soft things :)

Spacers were the most uncomfortable for me my mouth got very sore. It was like something was stuck in my teeth, and I could only eat soft foods..thankfully that was only for a week. The braces weren't really a problem, except when gettng them tightened, and that wasn't that bad.

spacers make room in between the teeth to find that bands on. When they place the spaces, it feels really tight. It feels like you have meat stuck in between your teeth. You will not be sore until later that night or the next day. Take some Advil that will help with the soreness, it will last a couple of days. Some of our patients say the spacers are the worse. With the spacers in, do not eat anything sticky, because they can come out. If they do, call the orthodontist and have them place them back in until the appointment and do not floss in between your teeth.

I am 11 and i got spacers when i was 9 spacers do not hurt that much. They will hurt a little when you first get them but not much at all. The first day eat stuff that is on the softer side. But when i got mine i had meat the first and you dont want to eat meat the first day trust me. And when you first get them they fell a little weird. Ohh and one more thing braces hurt more not spacer you barley fell them

Your Welcome

i got spacers last week and braces today. spacers feel like you have a annoying piece of floss stuck inbetween your teeth. you can eat anything really. i ate trident gum and it takes away the pain and it doesn't stick. spacers so far were worse than braces but i can't really tell you much. hope i helped.

OMG!! Spacers on the bottom hurt way LESS than spacers on the top! Right now, I am on my palate expander close to braces!

I went through all of this:

1. Impression: ( mold of teeth ) just breathe and relax!!

2. Spacers: i suggest not picking at them and for the pain i suggest ibuprofen because it had no taste so no icky or bad taste

3. Palate expander: Getting this taken off is a 10 but after you have it on for a day the pain is a 4.

SO CLOSE TO BRACES!!!

Hope i helped you a little! :)

i have braces, and i think the spacers were more painful than the braces are. the braces hurt sometimes for a day or 2 when adjusted / tightened, usually monthly. advil or tylenol definitely help.

in addition to the other suggestions for soft foods, i would recommend campbells soup at hand - it's a microwave cup with soup and small pasta/rice, etc. that you just heat and drink, no spoon needed. if you don't feel like eating at all, try nutritional drinks like ensure or boost, carnation instant breakfast, or yogurt smoothies, etc.

hope this helps - good luck!
