Question:

I have TMJ disorder and my oral surgeon told me there is nothing I can do, is this true?

I already asked this question but i did not detail it so here goes..

everytime I open my jaw it clicks and it hurts really bad at some points. The clicking has never stopped ever since I've gotten TMJ. 4 times in the past 2 months I have had this new thing where I wake up in the middle of the night and my jaw is stuck shut. I can open it enough to talk but not any further. It got so bad one night that I almost went to the emergency room. I tried a heating pack and it helped a little but I am so sick of this discomfort. I recently went to the orthodontist and I told him that I saw an oral surgeon for it and he told me that when I get my top retainer in the end of the summer, he will put something on it that will relieve the pain and discomfort. Is there any way that it will ever go away? My oral surgeon also took an x-ray and I saw that my jaw bone looks like it is chipped. He told me it is too thin to be shaved down to round it out. Please help me I can not take it any longer! Thanks!

Answers:

We all have things that we have to live with which may get better with time (you sound young). If you want another opinion see another professional who can examine you and your x-rays—don't ask a board like this. There may be some TMJ chat rooms where you can hear the experiences that others have had, but I would accept advice only from a professional..
