Is it ok to smoke after 24 hours from getting your wisdom teeth pulled?!

Question: So i just go 4 wisdom teeth pulled,(overated did not hurt nearly as much as people had told me). My dentist gave me a list of things to do and not do, One said "It is SUGGESTED that you refrain from smoking for 24 hours". Now I like to smoke weed, and no please dont tell me to stop, I dont need to hear it. Because I have read many of your answers to these questions and you get remarks like this;" Just Dont DO IT!", "its illegal you shouldnt anyway!" and "Wow now youve told everyone on the internet you smoke weed you will probably now get caught, good riddance"(this one was the worst, come and get me lol). Now I was ready to light up 24 hrs after until I looked on the internet and read people say wait 48 hrs, 72hrs , and even a week. Now,my question is if my dentist put 24 hours down is it for me? Please help , if it offends you think of me smoking cigarettes, lol.

If your dentist said 24hours, then it means 24hours

I wish I knew!

I know this isn't the answer you're hoping to get, but its not ok to smoke anytime.

no - you can get dry socket which is very painful

by the way - cut out the weed and grow up! - cigarettes are no better either!

when my best friend got all of his wisdom teeth pulled, he smoked the next day. he was fine, he did rinse his mouth after for a little cleansing. it didnt seem to hurt him

It's really bad from a healing perspective to smoke after any surgery or dental work. Try to keep away from it as long as you can. I would suggest to wait at least 3 days, but preferably more.

you really risk getting dry socket- and that would really hurt and last a long time. my advice would be to wait until you have healed up more...I would go at least the 3 days, and in all reality, a week. If you can't handle waiting a week, then I guess you have something to think about...but dry socket leaves a big hole where the tooth was and it takes forever to get better.

The reason you shouldn't smoke is a thing called dry socket.
It is also caused by drinking from a straw.
I smoked immediately after, but I was afraid of dry socket, never got it.
I left gauze in place and toked very softly
So,would I recommend it?No.
would I do it?Yeah.

not a good idea. if you get dry sockets from smoking, you won't like it, they are very painful.

It is suggested that you refrain from smoking after extractions because the sucking can disrupt the clot that forms after the extraction. They also discourage use of straws, for the same reason. Smoking pot is not the greatest idea, but neither is smoking cigarettes. No lecture on that! If your dentist said not to smoke for 24 hrs. I would go with that. He's the one who has actual knowledge of the condition of YOUR mouth. its good to hear you admit that the procedure is not as painful as people say--I thought it was much ado about nothing.

Dude, get real. You're healing from surgery. Don't screw around.

Technically, no. It puts pressure on the holes where you teeth were pulled and may cause bleeding. However, I lit one up after I got out of the office and smoked the rest of the day without problems. What can I say, it's an addiction. Just keep your mouth clean and make sure no food gets stuck in the holes and you should be alright. Good luck!!!

Be wise,don't smoke......

I just got mine out and the thing they gave me said no smoking for 3 days because it can cause bleeding and slow down healing. I guess it depends, but if I were you I would wait the full 3 days because it would suck to have that get infected or take longer to heal.

Hope I helped!

I did after my wisdom teeth were removed and I don't know if it is from smoking or not, but the holes never healed properly. I wouldn't recommend it.

First let me say that regardless of what ever habit you practice that is considered either illegal or unhealthy it's you that has to face the ultimate consequences should your habit result in your or someones else being harmed by your choice...Your responsible for your choices.
NOW, as for the 24 hour non-smoking issue following wisdom teeth extractions. Not only should you refrain from smoking you should not drink from a bottle with a small spout, such as a beer bottle, both of those create a suction and that can dislodge the blood clots in the extraction sites. Loss of the blood clots can subject you to "Dry Sockets" and that can be "very" painful...Drinking hot liquids can melt the clots resulting in dry sockets...The major factor with regard to the issue is your clotting factor. Not everyone's system causes blood to clot quickly or firmly and avoiding dislodging the clots is your protection against dry sockets. Refraining from smoking or the drinking issues I outlined for a period of at least a week would be the "Smart" decision on your part. The Dentists gave you an average caution not necessarily the best one. It's your choice and your responsibility....Go for it ...

As you have wounds healing in your mouth, it would be best to abstain until they have healed. Can't you just eat some hash instead in the meantime if you want a hit?

duh, follow the dentist's instructions! he said don't smoke, then don't smoke!

smoking is dumb anyway!

HA HA!

Will not affect the gums but will sure play heck with your lungs!! If you could see the smokers lungs we had in Gross anatomy you would never light up a gain. They were black & coated very heavy & made you wonder how they breathed at all. Non smokers were pretty pink linings! DMD 32 Yrs
