Dentist question?!

Question: I'm finally going to the dentist tomorrow (I'm not a hick..it's not my first time...) and although I just wanted a cleaning, they said they're going to do a "full workup". What does that mean....x-rays along with the cleaning? I'm just trying to imagine what else they could possibly do to me....

It seems like you are due for a comprehensive oral exam again, nothing major, depending on the practice habits, they will take full set of X-ray, or couple of them, they will check for any problems in the head/neck area that you are not aware of, a cleaning. every 6mo, or a year, the dentist will check if you have any new cavities as well, or if the filling he/she did are doing ok, or need some attention. depending on your age, they will evaluate if you need braces or not. they will check on your oral hygiene, and will help you learn the proper way to brush and floss if you need such help.
As a dentist, nothing makes me more comfortable than a patient who respect his/her check up exams, this way I can detect problems very early, which is very easy and cheap to fix.
patients who haven't been to the dentist in a long time, they often present with some big problem that makes scratch my head looking for a solution, so you don't want to be in such position.
So nothing to worry about really, and you don't have to start any major treatment at the day of the exam, you can re-schedule for it in another appointment if needed.
Good Luck

They'll check for cavities and fill them if need be. And check for any other problems.

It means that it's now post Christmas and they need to make some bucks to pay Visa and they ARE going to find something in your mouth to make some bucks(doing a filling, crown, extraction, x-rays, whitening etc.)

yea there probally gonna just clean ur teeth and along on what u said.

X-Rays. both sides and front. Not a big deal. Had it done today.

A "full" work up simply means that they want to Xray your teeth, do a visual examination and "Chart" your teeth, which means that on the Dentist's form he or she has a drawing of all the teeth in a persons mouth and as they visually examine your teeth they place specific marks on the chart form. If you have a decayed spot it will be marked on the corresponding tooth on the chart, if you have a missing tooth that will be marked accordingly. If you have existing filings they will be marked on the chart as well. If you need a filing that too will be marked on the chart, if you have an unusual growth or deformity in your mouth that will be charted. Once the chart is completed the Dentist can discuss and recommend any dental services your chart indicates you need.

full dental examination, x-rays, cleaning, fillings, if needed,
mammogram, pap smear, colonoscopy, electrolysis, bikini wax, haircut, manicure, pedicure, facials, mud pack, tanning, the works!

Xrays, charting of any new cavities, cleaning, discussion and quote.
It's your choice if you want all these things. Don't be afraid to say no, or to ask for a quote first before charting or Xrays..
