Answers: I got braces fitted today, I need to know what I can't eat and give me examples.

hiya, you can eat

softer food (especially for first few days as your teeth are going to hurt a bit as the brace starts to work this is temporary)
milk water reduced sugar or sugar free diluting juice

you cant eat

hard foods, hard sweets like twix, mars bars, rock, boiled sweets
sticky foods like chewing gum, toffee, steak (unless its cut very small)
sugary stuff like fizzy drinks (including sugar free), cotton candy, extra sugar in drinks.

things in moderation you can have as an occasional weekly treat are soft sweets like milky ways, buttons (small not large ones), fresh fruit juice, and maybe now and again perhaps once a month a fizzy drink of your choice.

the hard foods can break your brace and make the treatment last longer, the sugary stuff can cause tooth decay that will not show up until the brace comes off, the acidic stuff can cause erosion that can never be fixed unless its severe and you can then have veneers (but you never want to go down that road), and the moderation wont hurt you unless you have it too often.

what the orthodontist may not have warned you about is that you can break your brace if you brush too hard, so be gentle but thorough.

i hope you love your teeth afterwards.

When i had braces they told me that i couldn't eat chocolate. I had it anyway and it didn't effect my teeth at all. Don't have hard- boiled sweets though as it broke my brace. That is all there is i think. Good luck!

i wouldnt eat popcorn, b/c the kernal shells could get caught behind a bracket.. just use common sense.. if its hard, dont eat it.

I wore my braces for 5 years, things to avoid....Carmel, popcorn you will need to cut things up and chew really well, remember to brush your teeth after all your meals and they sell special floss to help you keep food out of your braces. Also remember to use mouthwash. Do not forget to ask for the wax packs to keep your mouth from getting sore around the brackets that hurt.

my daughter can eat anything as she has removable braces, top and bottom. She has to take hers out to eat though. The lower brace is to correct her jaw allignment and because of the type (block) she has no "bite" to her teeth unless the brace is taken off............

When I first got my braces, my ortho told me not to eat:
popcorn
chips
chew on ice
chewy candy
AND EVERYONE KNOWS GUM
cornuts
Chew on your pencil
So ya get the idea. [=
