Is my dentist crazy?!

Question:

Is my dentist crazy?

I just had my wisdom teeth removed. He prescribed the following (no joke):

1. Phenergan suppositories
2. Percocet
3. Phenergan tablets
4. Ibuprofen 600
5. Vicodin
6. Decadron
7. Amoxicillin

A few of them I could see...but come on...all of them? What about the suppositories?? Isn't that the wrong end? Is my dentist crazy or am I missing something?

Answers:

As a dentist I am not sure why your regular dentist prescribed you this much medication. I can understand the Percocet, Ibuprofen (as this can usually be taken with Percocet if pain is not relieved), Phenergan and Amoxicillin (I assume you have no penicillin allergy) but the Vicodin is a little much, especially with the other pain relievers he has prescribed. I can understand the Phenergan suppositories because if you get a severe case of nausea from the pain medication a suppository will dissolve much quicker into the bloodstream than a tablet will. You may need to check with your pharmacy, they will usually call the doctor to verify that the prescription he/she wrote is in fact what they have ordered for you. In most cases I, myself, would have prescribed: Percocet, Ibuprofen 600 or 800 and an antibiotic. As always if you have any type of reaction to any of these medications visit you local ER immediately. Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon!
