Bruising with 6 year old molar?!

Question:

Bruising with 6 year old molar?

My 5 year old son seems to be starting to cut his 6 year old molars. On the upper left side, it looks to be bruised (a molar sized purple spot)? Is this normal or should I take to him our dentist? I don't remember this with my older children.

Answers:

It is pretty common for children to have these purple/blue areas on their gums where their teeth are fixing to erupt. The cells/membrane that preceeds the eruption of teeth causes this. It is normal. Usually it isn't seen much b/c of the other teeth blocking view/ Most parents don't pay that close of attention. Many think their child can brush and floss their own teeth. Kudos to you for being a good parent. Remember not only to help him brush but also teach him to floss now before those permanent molars come in. Try those little cute flossers on a stick and get him interested.
