Why don't teeth heal?!

Question:

Why don't teeth heal?

Almost every part of our body heals, outside of the nervous system, so why not our teeth? Why do we not heal the cavities in our teeth? Our skin gets hurt we regrow it. We break a bone we heal it. The internal organ will even heal if slowly and not too damaged. So why don't our teeth heal?

Answers:

Very simple. During tooth development 2 layers of cells begin to form the tooth. As they move away from each other 1 lays down the enamel and 1 lays down the dentin, the yellow inside part of your tooth. The enamel forming cells are destroyed after the tooth erupts into the mouth and therefore the enamel can not regrow. The dentin can continue to grow throughout your lifetime as the dentin forming cells are present in the dental pulp. This goes out the window after root canal therapy.
