Brushing tooth with a root canal?!

Question: can i brush on the tooth that i had a root canal? im asking because they say that the filling is temporary and is not meant to last before you get the permanent crown. so will the filling break or something if i brush too hard on it or shouldnt i brush on it at all. please tell me. and i know i cant eat on that side RIGHT? or can i? idk but im afraid to do anything on that tooth.

A tooth which has been treated endodontically has a permanent filling in the canals. On top of that filling material is a temporary putty like material that your general dentist removes and replaces it with whatever permanent restoration he/she has recommended. Back teeth require a crown and build up or post & core. Crowns are there to protect the tooth from breaking. Teeth with root canals become brittle and can break under the force we place on them whether it be from chewing and/or clenching and grinding our teeth. Front teeth normally just need a composite filling in the access opening on the back side of the tooth. Go ahead and brush your teeth, but get back to your general dentist no later than 1 month from the time you had the root canal. If the temporary filling comes out and you do not get to your dentist, you run the risk of reinfecting the tooth and that would require the root canal to be retreated. One sign that the temporary filling is pretty much gone is a medicine like taste in your mouth. As far as eating on that side, chewing food on that tooth will have a tendency to cause the temporary filling to pit out. If the tooth is still sore, then baby it. Think of it like you would a sprained ankle. You wouldn't jump up and down on an ankle that was sprained would you? No, you would stay off of it while it heals and baby it. Same holds true with a tooth that has recently been treated by a root canal. The ligaments surrounding the tooth are "sprained" right now. Chew on the other side and take Ibuprofen as recommended on the bottle for 4-5 days. That will help the tissues heal quicker.

I had a root canal done on my bottom front tooth. Brushing it will be fine. Can you believe that my temporary filling lasted me three years? I had a VERY good root-canalist!I kept putting off getting it permanently filled. If you are going to be pro-active about getting it permanently filled, don't worry about it falling out. I brushed my tooth everyday, twice a day, and flossed- it never came out. Yes, you can eat on the tooth. Just I wouldn't go to the extremes lke eating tons of ice chunks on that tooth- you don't want to chip it or something before you get it permanently filled. Good luck- and keep brushing!

hey i just had a root cannel heres my story i went to the dentist and i had a root canal i couldent even bite down what so ever i felt like crying they did half the root canal thing but sent me home with a none permanent filling and said if it falls out it will take to minutes to put back in so my answer is its pretty hard for them to fall out mine sure didn't the feeling of it may feel a little different like the filling will feel like dry toilet paper but they told me to ignore that area until i go back to finish it in my case they couldent finish the root canel when i went back because the tooth was supposed to have 3 prongs but 2 grew together so just leave that area alone and if they end up having to pull it out they will put stiches in there like i had and they really dont dissolve it uravels i had to cut half my stiches out well best of luck my answer is to just leave that area alone.

The temporary cap is very strong..didn't they seal it on for you? I was told no gooy food or caramel kind of sticky foods while having the temporary on. But you can most certainly brush and even floss because of the strong glue they used. And if your temporary should pop off..like mine has done, also..simply take it to the office and they will put it back on for you. Just use common sense and you will be fine!
