Is it normal to get asked for a £10 deposit when joining a new dentists as an exempt NHS patient?

It's not normal for dentists to ask for a deposit - but they are allowed to. I am guessing you will recieve this back when you go for your appointment. They do this to prevent people missing appointments without a valid reason. Thus if you do not give enough notice when cancelling an appointment they keep the deposit. However if you do have to cancel at very short notice and have a very good reason they should return your deposit.
