Don't put just anything in your mouth. Some objects & foods can loosen or break appliances. So think about these tips before you take a bite:
Slice fresh vegetables, fruits & other hard-to-chew foods before eating them.
Aviod hard foods like popcorn, nuts, or corn chips. Dont chew on ice.
Dont eat sticky foods like gum, caramel, taffy & gummy candy.
Cut down on sugary foods and soft drinks. If you do have them, brush your teeth right after.
Dont chew or bite objects such as pens, pencils, crayons & fingernails.

chewing gum is the main one
other than that not much else damages them.-maybe really chewy candy or sumtin

Can really eat anything you want but food might get stuck in your teeth/braces. Dentist will probably suggest you don't chew gum.

You can eat pretty much anything. It all depends on how much time you want to spend cleaning your teeth. They tell you not to eat popcorn. Also, each month when you get them tightened your teeth will be very sore for a few days, so it is easier to eat soft foods. Just be sure to really clean your teeth well or you will get cavities around the braces.

I figured out pretty early that I could eat whatever I wanted, as long as it wasn't overly hard (popcorn kernels), or scraped up against my brackets (corn on the cob)

I ate everything, and had them for five years...I am 21 now and have never had a cavity, or chip or anything...the only thing was one of the years I had them on I couldn't get work done b/c I was pregnant, and after a year I had to have one glued back on...

Just don't eat hard items like toffee, carrots or apples without cutting them up!

Can- pizza, spaghetti
Cannot- Gum, popcorn, just cheese

No:
Gum
Taffy
Sticky Candy
apples-sounds odd....but since there hard when you bite into them they pull off the brackets

Can Eat:
Anything but sticky candy

P.S. They give you a list when you get them.
P.P.S. I ate anything I wanted to anyway.

Okay. Most people that have just started with braces cannot eat foods such as soft candy, just so it wont get stuck to your teeth, but hard candy also. Chewing on gum right away will make your teeth hurt, and thats about it. Just remember to eat the healthy foods, but after a couple of months (2-3) you can eat just about anything. :]

To tell you the truth, I ate everything and anything.

From taffy to gum itself, I could've cared less what I ate.

As long as you brush your teeth and pick the food out with the thingy they give you, you shouldn't have problems.

I just got my braces off not too long ago either, and they turned out fine.

The worst that can happen is your braces can break and your parents will be ticked and have to pay more money to have them fixed, but that'll only happen if you naw on jaw-breakers all day or if sticky stuff rips the brace off your tooth....both which aren't good.

Well, good luck! :)

Poisin berries and poisin ivy.

I have braces right now and they arent as restricting as you think.
When you first get them on, its hard to bite things because your teeth are moving a fair bit, which makes them a bit sore. Stick to yogurt and soft things that dont require much chewing.
Once your teeth and everything feel alright, you can pretty much eat everything you did before, just not really hard things like apples and rock candy. I wouldnt advise eating chewing gum either.
If you do eat sugary food (the orthodontist will tell you not to, but we all cheat) make sure you brush your teeth thoroughly at night or after you've eaten.
You are supposed to brush your teeth after every meal, but I just brush and floss heaps at night and in the morning and havent had any problems like they tell you you will if you don't brush after every meal.
Braces don't hurt that much. Its scary before you get them on, I know, because you don't know if it will hurt or not and you don't really want them in the first place. But honestly, they arent a big deal, and even though they feel a bit weird to begin with, you soon get used to them and eventually you stop even noticing them!

I hope I've helped.

Well right off the bat, you can chew gum, but it has to be sugarfree and not the sticky stuff.

And stay away from a lot of chewy candy like taffy and such.

I have braces and I eat a lotta stuff. I have noticed though that popcorn is probably the most problematic....if you eat it, make sure to brush and floss like crazy because it gets all stuck up up in there and its the hardest to get out. :)
