Is it common practice to request gas when having 3 fillings?!

Question: I am having scaling and root planing done next week. The following week I will be having 3 cavities filled.

My mouth is really sensitive due to the issue with my gums. I am wondering if it is common for patients to request gas for fillings?

Thanks for your advice.

It would be highly advisable for you to have N20 during any dental procedure after have root planning. The root planning procedure itself usually results in receded gum tissue exposing a few mm of the root, which will cause hypersensitivity to water and air in all the teeth that were scaled. Having a few filling will require anesthetic for those teeth, but the others will be normal and react to the water and air that the high speed hand piece sprays out. You will want N20 along with the anesthetic, even the topical may cause some painful hypersensitivity, you may even request the placement of a denta patch for the other teeth to be anesthetized without an injection, and do request warm water to rinse with during and after the procedure, rather than the hand piece air/water syringe water. Let your dentist know if you are experiencing any pain, he will do his best to alleviate it, making you as comfortable as possible. We are aware of the sensitivity but everyone reacts differently to their pain, so don't be afraid to speak up. With this appointment being so soon after your root scaling procedure, you will be much more sensitive, as you have possibly noticed with drinking hot or ice cold things. Over time the dental tubules of the exposed root will seal off and the teeth will be less sensitive.

it is not uncommon to have patients ask for gas, the dentist understands that it helps relax many people. go ahead and ask for it.

Lots of people request either Nitrous Oxide or oral sedation when having dental work. Why not have all the procedures you've mentioned done at one visit? In my office, we use oral sedation and work on the patient in one visit. It's easier on the patient and the dental office alike. Also, ask about Oraquix. This is an anesthetic that does not require a needle for placement.

hey, i have had many fillings and it does not hurt but if your gums are really sensitive and sore i would say that the best thing to do would be to ask and see what the dentist says, Good Luck.... I hope it goes well!! :)

I recommend it! I just had three fillings done & I wish I had requested it. It wasnt all too painful, but I was so anxious. My doctor & hygenist were wonderful & talked me thru it. I was in the chair about 2 1/2 hours but I had some other stuff done too.

If your dentist wont give you gas - you might want to consider Sedation denistry?

I used it routinely for 20 yrs never charged for it. My patients had a good time!! Used it for most every thing. Used it myself when had my teeth cleaned, use it but don't abuse it!! DMD 32 yrs

If you want it have it and don't mind "common practice." Nowadays most people just have a sedation dose which just relaxes you I think. That's quite common in some countries - less so in Britain I think. You don't have to be knocked out any more like the good ol' days.
