How do I talk a dentist into putting me to sleep for necessary work?!

Question:

How do I talk a dentist into putting me to sleep for necessary work?

I am a diabetic and dentists don't want to put me to sleep to do the work. I am not saying it's because I am diabetic, I don't know why they won't. Novacaine makes me nervous and jittery but they keep giving it to me. I need some work done, the tooth is broken off below the gum line. I do NOT want to be awake to hear the scraping and grinding of the tools on the tooth or the bone in my jaw.

What can I say to a dentist so he will put me to sleep? And yes, I have asked, many times and never gotten a good answer, not even "You are diabetic and it's not safe to put you to sleep during this process." Sylvia

As a practicing dentist myself I recommend that you call around and find a dentist willing to listen to your concerns and is willing to work with you. We usually do like to work with patients who have only had a Lidocaine injection because its more easy to communicate regarding the problem during the procedure. I always leave the final decision up to my patients, I would always do what was the most safe and comfortable way to help my patients and help keep them calmed and relaxed at the same time. We as dentists are here to keep you and your teeth healthy and we should always listen to your concerns and we always go with what makes you feel the most comfortable. Good luck and I hope you can find a dentist willing to listen to your concerns.
