Answers:

It's an expansion retainer. My 7 year old son has one to push his front teeth forward due to a severe underbite. He has been in this appliance for about 1 year. After his front teeth fall out he will go in to a 2nd appliance to keep the front teeth out and to also push his side teeth out a little more. This will probably take another year and then he will go into braces. The appliance is adjusted every few days with a little key that you put in a hole in the appliance and turn. This widens the appliance to apply more pressure on the teeth that need to be moved. It is a pretty slow process but everyones treatment time will be different. So in other words, no, you wont get your braces right away, you have to wear the appliance until your teeth are in the right position.

Good Luck!
