I had braces for about 2.5 years... here are a list of things to avoid eating unless you are going to be able to brush directly afterwards:
popcorn
rice
fruit snacks (actually you're not ever really supposed to eat these)
blow pops and tootsie pops are both a really bad idea (they pulled off my brackets)

basically you want to avoid things that are going to get stuck and look really gross.

As for them hurting... basically the brackets will irritate the inside of your mouth for the first week or so you have them and then your mouth will toughen up. However, your teeth themselves will hurt for a couple of days every time you get them tightened (the second day aways hurts worse) but it's nothing you can't handle! it will be alright! just take it easy! The results will be worth it in the end, i promise you!
good luck!

Well, my orthodontist says that I can eat anything in proportions. Although he doesn't like me eating hard candy at first and really sticky foods, but you can chew sugarless gum.
If you want an apple or a bagel or something like that, you need to cut it up into smaller pieces to eat it. May be a hassle, but it's worth it in the long-run. Also, if your doctor tells you that you can and cannot eat certain things, it's not always true. You can eat just about anything you want, once again, in proportions. Just be careful.
For me, when I got my braces on, it wasn't painful at all. There was mild discomfort for about a day, but that was all.
For other people, though, it can be quite painful.
It depends on the person.
My teeth were pretty straight, and I can take pain fairly easily.

It doesn't really "hurt" but your gums may be sore from the new fixed braces on them. Most of the time the orthodontist willl tell you what you can and can't eat. Like extremely chewy foods or sticky foods like gummy bears and starburst. You also may want to stay away from chips and popcorn. You can eat them, but the kernals get stuck in your teeth and the chips become jagged when chewing and may get caught under the wire. Which is uncomfortable. Other then that braces are just fine. Good luck. ;)
