Recent extraction pain.?!

Question: Just recently I had my #11 tooth (I think that was the number)extracted (canine) due to a bad abcess and the tooth got chipped. Now the extraction went exceptionally well and the abcess was drained and such but the left side of my face is till swollen with some throbbing around the area as well. The area where you could feel the abcess bulging from the outside of my face still seems a bit prominent and bulged as well. Did they fully drain the abcess or is it still there? It has been about 24 hours since it was pulled, and normaly in the past I've never had swelling or anything occur except this time. Currently I am on antibiotics and 600mg ibprofun as well as percocets if needed. Is this swelling and throbbing normal?

Sometimes it does take longer for swelling to go down after an extraction. Make sure that you hold an ice pack to the outside of your face closest to the extraction site, uncovered (protect your hand, not your face) for 10-20 min each hour. Also, very gently swish warm salt water, but don't spit it out..just let it fall out of your mouth.

If the swelling does not start going down and you don't see any changes, call your dentist/oral surgeon back and see if you can get it to have it looked at, or see if they can tell you what is going on.

Best of luck - hope you feel better soon!

The swelling and throbbing are normal reactions after an extraction. If after the extraction you went home to sleep off the pain and laid on the side it was extracted than it caused it to swell. My son had a wisdom teeth extraction and he swelled after he laid on it. It took about a week for the swelling to go down. It's very important to follow the dentist instructions to avoid any possible discomfort. The only solution would be to call the dentist and have it be rechecked. My son had to do that cause the pain was so bad but it was due to food lodging into one of the holes. Just go see your dentist.
