I have dry socket and went to the dentist. They put gauze over it after packing !

Question:

I have dry socket and went to the dentist. They put gauze over it after packing it. When should I take it out?

I went to the dentist this morning at 10am and they rinsed the dry socket, filled it with some dissolving brown paste stuff that resembles chewing tobacco, and then covered it with a piece of gauze and said that the gauze will help keep the paste in longer. When can I (or SHOULD I) take the gauze out? It's been like 10 hrs since they put it there. They said since the paste dissolves on its own, I won't have to return to the dentist, so i won't be having it packed again. So what should I do about the gauze??? How long should i leave it there? Can I eat with it in? Help!!!

To the dentist who said about taking the packing out: trust me, I wouldn't even THINK about taking that out! I was asking about the GAUZE...I thought I made that pretty clear:) But in any case, thanks for the advice...
