Is it acceptable to wear my retainer at alltime apart from when I'm at colle!

Question: My orthodontist said to wear it all the time but i really don't want to have the mickey taken out of me by my friends. But I also don't want my teeth to mess them selves up.

Can i have to best both worlds or do i have to choose between my teeth and my friends.

(I am aware I'm being a little over dramatic, but could some of you give me your advice?)

Thanks,

Liv.

i am assuming you have completed your treatment and this is to hold your teeth in place.

you need to wear the retainer all the time as your teeth will be unstable, teeth can move back 5 times faster than they moved in the first place. you will probably only have the retainer for a year in normal circumstances and normally its only all the time for no more than 6 months then you will be able to go onto night time use. if you do not wear it all the time your teeth will stay in a state of flux, your teeth move back at night and move squint during day. you will find the retainer tight every night and thats when you know your teeth have moved.

you will probably find that 50% of your class mates have already had orthodontics so im sure they will not take the mickey out of you. but if they do, just remember your teeth are looking better than theirs, and you have the perfect smile and they wont.

don't assume that people will slag you off for wearing a retainer, not many people will notice it and your speech will return to normal within a couple of days, try reading aloud as much as you can tonight and tomorrow morning, it will help your tongue get used to something being there and help you get your speech back faster.

if this is just the start of your treatment with a removable brace (sometimes called a retainer) you will slow your treatment down making it last twice as long.

I'm supposed to wear mine all the time, but I only wear it at night- and only the nights I REMEMBER at that. Sometimes if I forget for too long, it hurts when I put it back in, but my teeth readjust themselves. I'm sure you'll be fine if you wear it only at night.. as long as its been like a few months since you got it. Wear it ALL the time for at least a few months. lol

All the time means ALL THE TIME - your orthodontist is the expert here.

I would say wear it but then I am older than you but I too went through what you are going through and some of the jokes came from my own family so it was even harder for me but you have to be strong because it will not work properly if you keep taking it in and out.

Most Orthodontist will tell their patients to only wear it at night or when they feel their teeth start to shift. You should be fine as long as you wear it at least every other night. It may feel a little tight at first but it will still do the same job.

as long as you wear them most of the time, whenever you're not at school, you should be ok :) nights and for as long as you can at home :)

xx

it would be best if you just wore it. but if youd rather not, just wear it at night. some of the time is better than never

It is obvious that your orthodontist doesn't know what he is talking about despite spending 5 years at medical school learning his trade. I guess he must of told you to ware braces for a laugh. Nothing to do with what your teeth will look like in a few years time.
You, on the other hand are an expert. So, why bother listening to the dentist who knows nothing. Just ignore him!

Wear it all the time. Your teeth will get wobbly otherwise.
