Hello, I am a Dentist in South Carolina. Getting a cavity filled is a fairly simple procedure. First your dentist will inspect the tooth and will give you an injection of Lidocaine in the gum line just above the affected tooth, despite what you may have heard these injections are rarely painful and only "pinch/sting" for the first couple of seconds while the medication is being injected. You dentist will wait approx. 10 minutes to let you "numb up" and then he will being the procedure which is completely painless thanks to the Lidocaine earlier. Just take a deep breath and try to relax, this procedure is usually over in 30-45 minutes depending on the depth of the cavity. Afterwards when your injection has worn off you might feel some minor pain when you bite down, this is normal and over the counter pain medications can be taken, I usually advise my patients to take Motrin since it will not only help with the pain but also inflammation.
