Are oral hygiene and sleep related?!

Question: I have noticed that whenever I nap or sleep, or am deeply relaxed, my mouth has a bad taste. Is there an explanation for this? I brush twice a day.

Hi, I'm a dentist.

When you sleep, your salivary flow decreases. Saliva naturally helps to cleanse the mouth. While this effect is minimized during sleep, the bacteria in your mouth can colonize more rapidly, hence the nasty taste (and smell) when you wake up.

Hope that helps.

You do not swallow as often so while you are sleeping bacteria builds up in your mouth.

well I do know that the time you spend sleeping is the hardest time on your sleep... hence morning mouth

I think because when you're sleeping your mouth is closed the whole time causing the bacteria to form the bad smell..and from your saliva.

Yes there is a direct correlation of the 2. I'm betting that you may have some kind of sinus or allergy problems also.....and what happens when you sleep, you can't breathe out of your nose good, so you end up asleep and mouth breathing. The post-nasal drip that when you are awake you sniff and swallow, still drips down the back of your throat and dries on the back of your tongue. You awaken with that morning breath that people often describe as "a chicken pooped in their mouth" and it IS foul. A good tooth brushing AND MAINLY TONGUE BRUSHING WITH YOUR TOOTHBRUSH ....waaaaaay far back to the part that makes you gag, will clean it up and if you rinse with some warm water mixed with a little minty mouthwash and you will be set for the day!
My son has chronic seasonal allergies and we have perfected this routine. When he gets done with high school in 2 more years I will move us to FL where I never had allergy one til I moved to NC. The brushing of the tongue really really well is the trick, You don't need to invest in any of the fancy tongue gadgets, either.....we've tried all of them and a good old regular toothe brush (really the cheapest ones) do the best cleaning. good luck to you!
