Sealants are great. They are not a perfect system, but they help a lot in preventing cavities. Sealants are placed on the biting surfaces of teeth, in the deep grooves and pits. These areas are common places for cavities. Even with proper brushing, you can get cavities in these deep grooves and pits b/c the toothbrush cannot reach the bottom of them. Sealants are painted in these grooves to SEAL the grooves and pits off, similar to fingernail polish but lasts longer. It is not a perfect system. The tooth is cleaned off with a weak acid to make the pores of the tooth cleaned out. It is rinsed, dried, and painted with sealant material and then a light hardens the sealant onto the tooth. The material is held in place by the pores, grooves, and pits. If the tooth gets wet with saliva, the sealant does not stay. Thus, patient cooperation is crucial. They must hold their mouth open wide and hold still. Most offices guarantee them for 1 year. If they stay on for at least 1 year they usually stay on for much much longer. Like 3-5 or longer. Grinding of teeth, ice eating, or very chewy caramels can make the sealants come off. The sealants do not guarantee no cavities. They still must keep their teeth cleaned. If they do not floss, they will get cavities between their teeth. If they do not brush well enough, they can still get cavities around the sealants. It is just much less likely.

Yes I have sealants on my teeth.
