Tooth and ear pain??!

Question:

Tooth and ear pain??

I had a temp crown placed of my back lower molers (not the wisdom teeth but the one next to it) a week ago... on Friday it started hurting, but more of a throbbing, constant pain. Tylenol got rid of the pain almost immediately, but the pain just returned once the medication wore off.

Yesterday my ear started hurting whenever the tooth would hurt, but both would subside once the tylenol kicked in. Today, my upper molar (the one right above the one I mentioned above) started hurting also.

Is it possible that the lower molar tooth is causing all this pain? The dentist told me that the cavity was pretty close to the nerve, so maybe the cement of the temp crown got to the nerve and it's just irritating it? Or maybe I just need a root canal.

Also, is it possible that an ear infection is causing all of this?

I'm not too terribly excited about doing a root canal on my lower molar, but if it will stop all the pain I guess I have no other choice.

Any help would be appreciated.

But why would the upper tooth hurt then? It never had any sort of problems, and it doesn't have a cavity or anything.

Is it possible that the infection/pain from the lower molar is spreading to both the ear AND the upper teeth?

Answers:

You may need a root canal.
Do you find that you are hitting high on the temp crown? Feeling that your bite is off? Do you ever catch yourself clenching and grinding? I suspect you are putting to much stress on the jaw and your opposing upper molar. Stress to the jaw muscles may be triggering the ear pain. Try placing a warm washcloth on your jaw joint near the ear, repeat as necessary. This may relieve the tension. See of that helps a little and continue the Tylenol until you get your permanent crown seat. Do mention this to your Dentist.
If it doesn't get better or it gets worse before the seat date, see your DDS asap.
Hope this helps.
