*Edit:

If you look like this: http://ten.com.au/ten/images/Simpsons_Ba... then you have an overbite.

But if you look like this: http://thayer.dartmouth.edu/brainidb/ima... then you have an underbite.

If your top teeth are a little bit further ahead from the bottom ones, it's normal. But see a dentist.

an overbite is when you bite your upper teeth are in front of your lower teeth. and under-bite is when your upper teeth bite behind your lower teeth.

When you close your mouth and your top teeth goes over your bottom teeth (or sticks out further) and vice versa for an underbite.

you can tell when you bite down. If your top teeth come out more forward than your bottom teeth then you have an overbite. If all your teeth are sitting directly on top of eachother, then you do not have an overbite.

When the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth it is an overbite. Your dentist may refer to it as a class 2 malocclusion. With an underbite, your lower teeth are postitioned before the upper front teeth. Your mandible (jaw) would appear large/strong with your chin jutting strait out. This would be considered a class 3 malocclusion.
