Why is there a Poison Warning on Toothpaste?!

Question: In the USA, at least, since 1997, there has been a warning on toothpaste that says if you swallow it, to call a poison control center.
(look on the back of YOUR tube) If we know that Fluoride is bad, why do we still use it?

Fluoride ingested in large quantities is poisonous to your body. Under normal use you do not consume near a large enough amount to reach this level. The warning is more a concern for parents whose children either routinely swallow the toothpaste instead of spit it out -common- or eat a large amount accidentally.

i'm pretty sure it'll only hurt you if you swallow the whole tube or something.

I know that if you eat a whole tube you get a fever (our teachers told us that as a way of getting out of tests).

It's only poisonous in large doses... flouride is a mild poison, but its benefits well outweigh its detriments. I like clean, healthy teeth and gums, don't you?

because fluoride also has its benefits. getting too much of it can be a problem but i have never heard of it happening.

Because it contains fluoride, and fluoride is good for your teeth, but very bad everywhere else, particularly inside your body.

The warning is there because this component is poisonous, though fluoride is surrounded in much controversy so I guess rather than get sued, the toothpaste companies feel it better to print the warning. Just in case. The FDA may also have told them to do it too.

maybe they are just being over cautious. im in the uk and here we dont have such a warning. only to ensure kids under 7 only use a pea sized amount and dont swallow it. This is to ensure not overdosing on fluoride.
