Root Canal inquiry?!

Question:

Root Canal inquiry?

Okay so, after trying for several weeks to save my tooth, the stupid thing just seems to want to die.

So fine, today I called my dentist's office and told him my pain was getting on my nerves (no pun intended) and I want him to take a look at it.

He opened it up and saw that there was no infection, but the tooth did need a root canal because of the pain.

Oh yeah, I had pain in my upper molar and also in the ear, all thanks to the molar tooth that needed the root canal.

So anyways, he sat me down and took the nerves out. I'm pretty sure he also cleaned the pathways up, but he stopped there and told me to schedule with his specialist (it's a pretty big office) 2 weeks from today.

Now, my question is... is the worst part over? Because it DID hurt quite a lot until he gave the shots straight to the nerves... The rest is just filling the canals up and then shutting it with a cup right?

Just crossing my fingers that the worst is behind me, heh...

I don't usually mind dentists either, but when he gives you 3 shots and you still feel intense pain when he tries to make his way into the canals, it does hurt heh.

Once he got to the root he just gave it a shot directly, which hurt like HELL for about 5 seconds, but afterwards I didn't feel anything and the rest of the treatment was a walk in the park.

Oh and the reason I felt pain was because I probably ignored it for way too long to the point where it started hurting, and I guess I STILL came at a good time because he said that if I waited a couple more days I probably would've gone mad heh.

It is my fault for not taking care of it sooner, but once he injected my nerve with the shot directly I didn't feel anything.

He claims he doesn't do root canals anymore and just lets his staff take care of it... and it does make the sense, but the price is fair so i'm not complaining if everyone wants to get their share heh.

He just has all kinds of people working in his office, one only does root canals, another only does cleaning, etc. He usually takes care of crowns and implants and other stuff like that.

He gave me Dexamethasone for 4 days, 1 per day... and told me to take Advil if it hurts...i'm sure it'll be fine.

Answers:

I have had many root canals and they don't hurt much after, I see people calling out from work for several days and Ihave had it done and gone back to finish up the rest of the work day.

What does confuse me, why is he sending you to a specialist after the root canal? My dentist has only sent me out one time and that was when a root was twisted and he could not get past the twist. Your dentist should be able to complete the whole thing in a visit or 2. I suspect that he is sending you to a specaialist because he is in the same office because then they make more money.
