Why do toothless people still chew when there's nothing in their mouth?!

Question: sometimes I see elderly people as well as middle aged folks with this unpleasant habit

That's so funny, my daughter just asked me this the other day. I guess it's just a habit, subconsciously feeling their gums.

maybe it makes their gums feel better

there is still bone under there...my grandpa chews things and he has nothing.
another reason old people chew is because they have been doing it all thier lives. It would be hard to break a 60 year old habit, dont u think?

ask again in 50 years. don't forget to floss.

You can still "cut" some food with your gums plus it rolls around the flavour of the food rather than just shoving it in and swallowing.

I think because when they had tooth they used to chew and now they are not used to their new condition.

The term for chewing is masticate. It's not a habit, it's actually a natural response when eating, part of the digestion process. When you chew, the saliva glands are promted to start working. Saliva starts the digestion process by breaking down the food before it hits the stomach, making it easier for the stomach to continue the digestion. Even with no teeth you chew to break large pieces of food into smaller pieces making it easier to swallow and avoid choking. I've known people with no teeth who can eat apples.

my mom does the same thing... she has
tardive tisconisia... she has symptoms of parkinsons
she has false teeth in when doing this
don't let it bother you she tries her best not to do it
that in public. my sister is afraid someone comment about it
i'd knock them on thier a$$ our family dr took her off of
nerve pills causing her to sleep not eatting, there are cruel
people out there. and put her on some pill to help with
her condition

It is the gnashing of the gums at people who ask stupid questions.
