hello, i am bored rite now but anywho, people who r wondering i no this person so.... a couple days ago i was talking to my aunt who had the same thing ur havin, she said that it doesn't hurt unless the dentist doesn't give you the drugs, if he doesn't then it will hurt. but she said once you have it done, you will have no clue why u were so afraid. but she said don't eat hard foods rite after having the surgery, it could hurt in the numming wears off. she says ice cream is the best thing to have rite after, it makes you feel a lot better. talk 2 ya later.

Trust me, with Novocaine, you won't be able to feel a thing.

u gunna be fine. u have had so many tooth surgeries its kinda scary. having the operation is nothing. u will be all better after like a day or 2. thhe day i got my tonsils out i had fried chicken from KFC hah

I've had about 8 root canals, so I think I'm pretty experienced!

They're not a lot of fun, but trust me, it's better than what you're going through now!
Plus, when the infection gets into your root (as it has with you), it can get dangerous. Enough that it can kill you, because the infection can go into your jaw, the into your head, and to your brain.
I'm not trying to scare you, but you MUST get this done, and not chicken out!

The good news is, they remove the nerve of the tooth in a root canal.
So it's virtually impossible for you to get a toothache in that tooth ever again!
Don't worry, the next day, you will be fine! I promise!

P.S. - Write this down; if it still hurts while they drill (it usually won't) tell them to use CarboCain.
That works best for me.
Good luck!

I'm in the same boat. I'm going Friday to get 3 fillings, and i have 6 more to get, some of which may end up needing root canals.
You will most likely feel the novicane shot at the beginning, but after that, you will hardly feel a thing, and its gonna be better then the pain you're feeling now.
most dentists let you bring in an mp3 player or whatever with headphones, to help drown out the sound of the drill. you don't really feel the drill, but some people find the noise kinda disturbing.

I had a similar pain that I ignored for months that ended up needing a root canal, I know how much it hurts at the moment, but trust me, once you've had this done the relief will be amazing!
Once your mouth is all numbed you shouldn't feel anything (I didn't)...they'll remove the pulp and nerves first.
I then had a temporary crown on mine for a week whist the real one was being made up and the tooth settling down.
Then went back for second session...more numbing..and the tooth filled and the crown popped on!
I am still a nervous patient even now, but as my dentist said to me on my last visit, "If you can sit through root canal treatment, you can have anything done!"
It's so true.
Good luck with it, and look forward to the release from the pain you're in now!

BTW - The shots you get to numb your mouth DO NOT HURT! If it does, ask your dentist to rub some numbing gel on the gum, this will fix it for you, then you won't feel the injection.

Additionally - my mouth did not swell.

Treatments are usually done in 2 parts. After part 1 stick to soft foods and wait until the numbness has worn off before eating. Avoid eating on that side of the mouth.
After part 2 - pretty much the same. Once you feel ready, start eating soft foods on the root canal side then build yourself up. Before you know it, you'll be eating normally!

You should be given anti-biotics to take - do so to prevent infection. Take ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.

I went to work two days after the first part (but I had been sedated for it) and after the second part went back to work that afternoon.

Um ok so I think your getting a shot which hurts and try gargling with salt wtaer remeber do not swallow it it is very unpleasent and dont worry everything will be ok you might get 3 tears but dont move if you do it will hurt more and i wouldnt recommend going to school you still have the pain in for like 2 hours

GOOD LUCK

pain killers are a modern marvel for today's surgery...

To be honest a root canal usually doesn't hurt. I have been working in the dental field of 13 years and most of my patients are fine. A person may feel a little pain if there is an abcess. That is an infected tooth. If the tooth is infected it is hard for the anesthesia to work. Just remember that the root canal removes the nerve when that is out NO MORE PAIN. Ask for nitrous if you are real scared.
