Why does your lip feel fat when it's numb?!

Question: I just went to the dentist and got 4 fillings - one in each corner of my mouth. So my whole mouth is numb now and my bottom lip and my chin feel about the size of a watermelon.

What causes numbness? How does it work?

Why do numb areas feel so swollen?

When your lip goes numb, your brain can't work out where it is. It knows it's still there because some sensation is present, but it goes "searching" for it, and interprets this as a fat lip. A similar thing to people who have had limb amputations yet have "ghost" limbs.

because the nerves in your mouth are temporarily injured

It numbness is caused by the local anesthetic temporarily blocking the nerves from sending and receiving signals to your brain.
