Braces hurt somewhat and do have some effect on talking, but they are very much worth it. The two times when braces hurt is when your orthodontist has adjusted your wires and when a part of your mouth is rubbing against a sharp bracket or wire.

When it comes to wire adjustment your mouth will hurt for a while. For me it lasted anywhere from an hour to 2 days. Just take some over the counter pain medication and tough it out.

Metal digging into parts of your mouth is more difficult to deal with. The wax they give you is usually very effective. Make sure to check during the appointment to see whether part of the wire is sticking out of the last brackets. They can easily snip off metal from the wire if it is poking you in the back.

The last pain that you hopeful won't deal with is cavities. You need to brush two times a day. Skipping flossing for a couple of days won't kill you, but you still need to floss. It's a hassle, but you absolutely have to do it! Food gets trapped in braces that brushing and flossing won't get out, so get a WaterPik Dental Water Jet or a similar product. I'm always amazed at how much food a water jet removes. I went without flossing much or using a water jet for a while and got multiple cavities.

There is sometimes some change in speech, but the changes either go away or you get used to it. It's really not a big deal.

It does have some effects

They shouldn't. There is nothing between your tongue and your teeth. It is the retainer that will take only about a week to get used to. After that, your speech should be fine.

First, when did you get your braces? I've had mine for almost 5 years, and when I first got them on, I had problems talking too. It just takes a while to get used to them, with in a few weeks I could say every word perfectly. It just takes some time for you to adjust having them. And yes, at first they do hurt, but after about a week, you can't even tell you have them on!

It some times affects the way you speak

braces hurt really bad when you get them on...but the the pain goes away after a little bit. it shouldn't affect your speaking unless you have some sort of wierd applience.
