Full Mouth Reconstruction?!

Question:

Full Mouth Reconstruction?

The last time I visited the dentist, he told me that I would eventually need a full mouth reconstruction. Though I didn't have any decay or cavities, he said my teeth are slowly wearing away, so recommended I get that reconstruction once I start making more money.

My question is what does that entail? When I asked him, he said it could entail many different procedures, but my dad told me I would just get a mouth full of crowns. Has anybody out there had one before? If so, what did the procedure involve? Is this something I could put off for several years?

Thanks for the good answers so far. :-) I'm wondering, is this something that I can spread out over a matter of a few years, or do I need to get it all done at once?

Answers:

Full Mouth Reconstruction is basically crowning every tooth you have. Usually, the dentist is trying to get your jaw to open back up to what it originally was before all the wear on your teeth began. By having very worn down teeth, your jaw is over closed and can cause lots of problems. Your dentist will determine how much to open your bite and then have the dental lab make crowns to do this. You may have to wear an appliance for a few weeks prior to the crowns being made to get your jaw used to being in a different position. It is a very expensive thing to have done, but can be life changing.
