Can your gum grow back?!

Question:

Can your gum grow back?

Answers:

Gums will not grow back. You may get some tissues that have been rolled away by brushing in big circles, to push back up or down. I call this the "life-savor effect" Looks like an innertube at the base of the tooth. I have patients sweep up or sweep down from the very bottom of the recession area after first brushing in small circles at the base of the teeth. This is with a soft brush. If the recession is more of a cleft, then this would require a gum graft in the area. If you have too many areas to graft you may have to just live with the recession. I have found that people who have lots of recession in more than one area of their mouth, most likely are what we call Bruxers. Clenching or grinding teeth, primarily at night, but some do it in the day time also. You need to sleep with a grinding appliance in your mouth to keep your teeth apart. It is called a Night Guard, or Bite Splint. Some even make a Snore Guard that helps with snoring problems and grinding. If your teeth are sensitive in the recessed areas, avoid tartar control or whitening toothpastes. They will make your teeth sensitive especially on the root surfaces.
