Pretty much, it is inflammation of the space left behind where your tooth(wisdom) used to be. It can really hurt, but can be prevented if you keep food out of it.
When I had mine removed, the dentist gave me a syringe with a plastic flexible like needle I could use to extract food or to blow water into the area.
